Pakistan tightens security on eve of mourning month of Muharram.

Pakistan civil and security authorities in a recent meeting have reviewed security arrangements for the country, including its largest city of Karachi, on the eve of the holy mourning month of Muharram.

World Muslims, and specially Shias, observe the tenth day of Muharram, called the Day of Ashura, as the anniversary martyrdom day of Imam Hussein (AS) the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and son of Imam Ali (AS), who was martyred in the Battle of Karbala in the year 61 AH of the Islamic calendar (October 10, 680 AD).

According to a statement, military officials of Pakistan reiterated that security should be tightened around places of Muharram processions and along the streets where mourning rallies will be carried out.

All security institutions should coordinate through mutual channels of communication to ensure that peace is maintained, the Pakistani military officials said in the meeting.

They highlighted the importance of coordination between security establishments and religious leaders, ulemas and the residents of Karachi, the statement said.

During the meeting, the efforts of the security forces, police and intelligence agencies for establishing peace in Karachi were lauded, the statement added.

Earlier this week, the police had decided to ask the organizers of mourning processions, ceremonies and other religious activities to get their licenses renewed so that better security arrangements could be planned after analyzing the number of events and venues.

Meanwhile strict security arrangements have been put in place across Pakistan to avoid any untoward incident during the holy month of Muharram.

Pakistan has been the target of terrorism in the past and the government in the country takes special measures and prepared security plans each year during Muharram to ward off terrorist attacks on mourners and religious gatherings.
